AMES 44, SOUTHEAST POLK 34
Pleasant Hill, Ia. — Ames’ Jenna Power stepped outside Southeast Polk’s zone defense with 3-pointers on her mind.
Power hit two 3-pointers to help the Little Cyclones get the win.
“I kept telling myself, 'they’re going to go in if you shoot 'em,’ “ Power said.
Power’s two helped Ames take a 15-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Little Cyclones also remained poised at the finish.
Southeast Polk went on an eight-point run early in the fourth quarter to close the gap to 36-32.
Ames rallied with strong ball-handling, defense and 8-for-10 free throw shooting in the final 3 and a half minutes.
“When you’ve got a team go for a run like Southeast Polk, you’ve got to be able to finish,” Ames coach Joel Sullivan said.
Power, a sophomore, saw the results.
“Coach told us that we didn’t need to score, we needed to spread their defense and keep the ball in our hands,” Power said.
